Vella’s Contemporary Music at the Malta International Arts Festival
Maestro Vella`s music has once again been featured at the Malta International Arts Festival.
Following last year`s performance of one of his earlier orchestral works – “Overture alla Concertante (Opus 23)” – the Malta International Arts Online Festival 2020 presented Maestro Vella`s “Segments No.2″ (Opus 94), a 6 minute long (circa) piece for strings first performed in Genova, Italy, in 1999.
In this work, Vella explores a contemporary idiom, juxtaposing dissonant pedal tones with rhythmic patterns. “Segments No.2” was performed by the MPO String Quartet composed of musicians of the calibre of Marcelline Agius (on violin); Reggie Clews (violin); Nadia Debono (viola); and Frank Camilleri (cello).
