Works by Mro. Vella Featured Prominently in the 29th VIAF Edition
The 29th edition of the VIAF – Victoria International Arts Festival – draws to a close with its final concert on Monday, 13 July, at 8:00 p.m. in St George’s Basilica, Victoria, Gozo.
It features the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra performing Mro Vella’s Sinfonietta for Strings, Op. 36 alongside works by Haydn and Williams.
Vella composed this 17 minute work for strings in 1984, and it was premiered in Valletta`s impressive St John`s Cathedral.
Mro Vella’s music has also featured prominently throughout this year’s festival programme. Earlier performances at the VIAF included three motets sang by the Laudate Pueri Choir on 15 June, Segments No. 1, Op. 93 performed by the Janascharco Trio on 29 June, and Il Cantico delle creature, Op. 61 featuring soprano Maria Frendo on 9 July.
The closing concert provides another opportunity for audiences to experience the work of one of Malta’s distinguished composers as this year’s festival comes to a fitting conclusion.
