Three months, to the day

On the 25th May 2018, following an initiative coordinated by councillor Mr. Paul Fenech, a commemoration in honour of Maestro Joseph Vella was organised by the Swieqi Local Council, three months to the day following Mro. Vella“s very sudden, unexpected passing away. It was held at the Tal-Ibraġ Parish Church, Malta, under the patronage of Fr. Blake Camilleri.

The pleasant evening consisted predominantly in a recital of choral works interpreted by the Laudate Pueri Choir of the Basilica of St. George, Victoria, Gozo, with which Maestro Vella collaborated closely. The programme included Vella`s “Sequenza a due” – Opus 85, interpreted by soloists Maria Frendo (Soprano) and Antoinette Camilleri (Contralto) and the Agnus Dei from “Missa Brevis” – Opus 40 with Maria Frendo, leader of the choir, as soloist. The choir was directed by Rev. George Frendo. All works performed are part of the “Vella … A Cappella” compilation.

Particularly touching was also the “Message to a special friend” remembrance note written by Professor Oliver Friggieri. Amongst others, Prof. Friggieri fondly recalled his collaboration with Maestro Vella, as writer of lyrics for two of Vella’s oratorios (“Il-Belt Rebbieħa” – Opus 50 – and “Rewwixta” – Opus 54, both for SATB, Choir and Orchestra).
