Research Work Concerning Mro. Vella`s Music

Established pianist Francis Camilleri is focusing his doctoral studies at the University of Malta on Mro. Joseph Vella’s piano works. As part of his doctoral programme, Francis already performed in April 2024 a solo recital at the Teatru Manoel consisting of three works by Vella, that is ‘Scherzo’ (Op.10), ‘Sonatina’ (Op.30) and ‘6 Preludes’ (Op.70). The next recital will take place on November 17th 2024, and will comprise two additional works by Vella for chamber ensemble, namely ‘Għanjiet’ (Op.51) and ‘Riflessioni su un Tema di Stravinsky’ (Op.107). The concert will form part of the MPO Chamber series with additional information available via the following link: https://maltaorchestra.com/events/20th-century-chamber-music/

Next year, he will also be performing Vella’s acclaimed ‘Piano Concerto’ (Op.41).

Other research work is also being undertaken by Rendell Micallef, who is currently reading for a Diploma in Wind Band Studies at the University of Malta. Rendell is examining how cross-cultural influences have impacted Maltese marches, with emphasis also on some of Mro. Vella`s band marches.

Good luck Francis and Rendell!
