Last Saturday, November 16, at Teatru Astra in Victoria Gozo, I conducted another extremely successful concert with the La Stella Band in attendance. The evening was played to an absolutely packed opera house. Once again, the Band rose magnificently to the occasion, playing the varied pieces on the programme with a finesse and verve that truly attest to the Band being considered as one of the leading ensembles on the Island. This is my 43rd year as Musical Director of the band – a long time indeed, during which I have seen so many fine musicians come and go, mostly because of retirement. I am happy to see that the present young element in the band, together with other new faces, not so young but equally valid contributors, augurs well for the future. During my long tenure I have also witnessed the gradual rise to excellence with which today the Band is generally attributed. During the concert, newly appointed assistant director, Mro Sigmund Mifsud, also made his introductory appearance, conducting one of the items on the programme. My thanks also go to Mro Noel Beck, substitute conductor, for the sterling work he has been doing over the last ten years or so, by giving both individual and sectional training often as a preparatoy excercise for these big occasions
